231ST ENGINEER COMBAT BATTALION Camp Desert Rock Las Vegas, Nevada
5 November 1951 SUBJECT: Operational Report of OPERATION DESERT ROCK TO: Commanding Officer The following week of operation proved to be merely a continuation of jobs started in the previous weeks. New work orders continued to pour in and these were assigned to the appropriate companies. The sign shop continued to be swamped, the electricians continued the installation of electrical facilities throughout the camp. The heavy equipment worked ceaselessly on the jobs assigned them and the carpenter shop, finding that their load had lightened, cut down to one shift daily. One of the biggest jobs confronting this battalion was the erection of wall tents and squad tents for the VIP area and the Visitor's area, and the construction of the necessary latrines and facilities to accompany them. Some of the miscellaneous jobs which bear mentioning were: watering of the access roads, operation of the sanitary fill, which was a continuous operation, extension of the air-strip from 1500 to 4500 feet, the removal of shower units from one area to another, and general camp maintenance, which required attention to numerous minor repairs necessary.
