30 October 7:20 a.m. Charlie Shot - It was the biggest one we had seen - Charlie was a lot bigger than the others - the explosion and the air blast, the noise was much louder and the flash from the explosion was much more pronounced. It was the first one where we could feel the heat through our field jackets - we had our collars turned up because it was cold. The heat disapates with the flash, so by the time we turned around we didn't feel the heat any longer. When we turned, it was beginning to form the mushroom cloud and watching the mushroom cloud was quite amazing to watch it grow. We still thought this duty was better than Korea.

The desert is dusty, one can't help but stir up the dust. We would come back from the ground zeros and our faces would be dirty from this dust. We just called it (the ground zeros) the Test Site. We didn't really call it Able, Baker or Charlie. The sites were only a minute or two from each other, distance wise.

Baker, Charlie and Dog all utilized the same Ground Zero and as soon as the Baker Shot was detonated (or exploded), we went into the area to prepare the site for Shot Charlie. Likewise, when Charlie was exploded we prepared the same site for Shot Dog which was larger again than Charlie.
