SUBJECT: Operational Report of OPERATION DESERT ROCK

TO: Commanding Officer
354th Engineer Combat Group
Ft Lewis, Washington

continued

It was nearing the close of the operation when orders were received to layout Areas 7, 8 and 9, which were similar to Areas 1 through 4 but on a minor scale. However, they would have large mine fields in the forward parts of the areas. Construction was completed in minimum time and every thing was made ready for D day.

The Company's Command Post and bivouac area were located directly behind a small hill which would shelter the area from any effects of an atomic detonation. On C and D day the company was marched to the forward slope of the hill and seated to witness the explosion. All personnel were cautioned not to face the blast but rather to wait until the order was given to turn by an officer equipped with AEC approved glasses.

Thus, it is to be noted that the company witnessed all of the atomic explosions from a distance of about 10 miles.
