The following is a description of Areas 1 through 9 as constructed in the Forward Area during Operation Desert Rock:

(y) Concrete Machine Gun Emplacement

In addition, there was a special machine gun emplacement of new design and another animal pen installed. Camera, shelter pits were set up in strategic locations through out the areas.

After one of the shots I remember seeing one of the sheep in the animal pens. It looked sorta bewildered - and was really badly burned.

The three surface equipment emplacements were 20 foot sections Bailey Bridge, a D 7 Dozer and a one-quarter ton 4 X 4.

There were minor differences among the three areas but this general layout was followed throughout all of them. The types of equipment varied slightly in each area.

Area 5

Area 5 was merely a parking lot where the Visitors would entruck after completing their tour of the emplacement areas.

Area 6

Area 6 was a parking lot where the Visitors detrucked before witnessing the atomic detonation. From this area they moved to an assembly area which was set up to facilitate giving the orientation lecture. Upon completion of the lecture and witnessing the detonation, the visitors would go back to the trucks and prepare for the tour of the emplacement areas.

Areas 7 through 9

Areas 7 through 9 were the mined areas and also contained a few small emplacements which were designed to test a variety of quartermaster materials.

I remember seeing the quartermaster materials out there. Brand new field jackets - better than mine, in fact, I remember thinking that I could use that new one - the kind with a liner cause it was damn cold at night in the desert. ~ Italics are Bill Bires's narrative
